The Great Big Sandwich Roundup

Imagine coming to work with Elvis Presley's Peanut Butter, Banana, and Bacon Sandwich. It might just turn heads. While Milton Crawford, author of The Hungover Cookbook, admits that the "sandwich is, of course, in very dubious taste" it is not in any way dull, contrived, or well worn. Quite the opposite, in fact. (Although, some might say, it's just plain wrong.)

Admittedly, that sandwich is not for everyone. For those who insist on more sophisticated flavor combinations, titillate the old taste buds with this Ginger Barbecue Brisket Sandwich of Ratha Chau fame — as in the popular and famous Cambodian sandwich shop Num Pang, in New York City. Or, throw a little whimsy into the lazy Sunday morning routine with these Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast Sandwiches, as in, yes, Dr. Seuss. Don't worry, it's actually a very adult sandwich — chive scrambled eggs, arugula pesto, and prosciutto. The colors are there; the madness, fortunately, is not.

Indeed, there's something for everyone here. It's probably safe to say that nearly everyone has something approaching a relationship with this ubiquitous and portable workhorse of the daily lunch routine, but it doesn't have to be pedestrian or commonplace. It can be decadent, surprising, over-the-top, or just plain good. Even though on some days another sandwich is the last thing we want to see, other days it is an object of desire, craved and missed. Here's to rekindling that craving.
