German Shepherd Becomes Texas Celebrity After Braving Storm For A Bag Of Dog Chow

Every dog will have his day — even in the middle of a horrific natural disaster. A Facebook photo of a German shepherd mix named Otis carrying a large bag of dog food up a rainy road in the midst of Hurricane Harvey has gone viral. The poster, Tiele Dockens, wrote, "This dog is walking around Sinton TX carrying a entire bag of dog food with him. LOL #refugee." The photo has been shared over 33,000 times.

Salvador Segovia was dog-sitting Otis for his 5-year-old grandson, who had been forced to flee the incoming storm. Segovia claims to have left the dog in his screened-in back porch shortly before Hurricane Harvey hit the Texas coast, reports The Washington Post. Otis busted open the screen door and ran away. Dockens spotted the 6-year-old pooch a few miles away from Segovia's house, snapped a photo, and followed him home to make sure he wasn't lost.

But this isn't Otis' first rodeo. Segovia tells The Washington Post that the dog ventures out alone all the time — to the county courthouse, antique shops, the grocery store, and Dairy Queen, where patrons give him ice cream and hamburgers. He knows his way around town, and people always feed him.

Segovia believes Otis may have walked over to the lumber store before he was found Aug. 26, and somehow got inside and grabbed a bag of dog food. "Otis is a smart dog," he added. "He knows where to go pick up a treat."
