The Vortex, which has two Atlanta locations, is a crazy place. First of all, just to enter the restaurant you have to walk through a giant skull with crazy eyes that also happens to be the main entrance. The menu has a full page of rules ("We maintain the right to refuse service to any person that, in our sole opinion, is a great big jerk."). They also don’t allow anyone in who’s under the age of 18 because of smoking laws. And while all of this kitsch and attitude might make for a great distraction from underwhelming food anywhere else, the burgers here are the real deal (and so are the sweet potato tots). The Hell's Fury burger is a gargantuan half-pound patty of Choice sirloin, topped with pepper jack cheese, something called Atomic Death Sauce, habanero relish, and a whole roasted jalapeño. Not for the faint of heart, but if you’re into spicy food, this very well might be the tastiest burger you’ll ever encounter. — Dan Myers

Foursquare Tips

  • Burgers here are to die for! On Man v Food Nation, Adam Richman tries a burger so monstrous that it's held together by 2 grilled cheese sandwiches!
  • Order the Double Coronary like it's your regular burger. Down the entire thing like a pro. Act like you've been there before.
  • I recommend the chili
  • Follow the rules!
  • If you like blue cheese, you would be doing yourself a great disservice if you did not get the blue shroom burger...amazing!
  • The Yokohama Mama is the best!
  • One of my favorite Atlanta institutions. But it's really time to move into the 21st century and nix the smoking! (And that goes for the rest of GA too.)
  • Order the fried Zucchini. Side or appetizer, your call. It's delicious.
  • Its the kind of place you want to take out-of-town guests, if only just to shock them with the existence of the Triple Coronary Bypass burger. [Eater 38 Member]
  • Funky atmosphere, loud music, enormous selection of bottled beers and some of the best and biggest burgers in town. Black bean soup and home-style pimento cheese are excellent, too.
  • If you haven't, read the front of the menu.
  • Definitely go for the tots, sweet potatoes or the rings over the regular fries
  • Crave from the Grave: Like it spicy? The "Hell Burger" is topped w/ habanero relish, jalapenos, & pepperjack cheese. I'm sweatin' just thinking about it! Give the tots a try for your side item too.
  • You want to go Hell Burger. Not too hot, not too messy, way too good. R N T.
  • Order an absinthe and some tatter totts, have a smoke at the bar and remember, life is good.
  • Wanna get tipsy? Try the Skull Crusher..its the whole damn bar
  • Get the guacamole burger, it's to die for!
  • The ethos of late-night eating is perfectly summed up in the title of one of their most formidable burgers, the Coronary Bypass.
  • Bad service, ridiculous rules, cocky attitude, but their food is to die for. Avocado burger = heaven
  • It's unfortunate for the servers that the hostess and management are fuckwads !
