20,000 Orchids To Bloom In Miami Beach

Miami Beach will bloom with orchids. About 20,000 of them, to be exact, during the next three years.

The city is partnering with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden's Million Orchid Project to plant native orchids throughout the island city.

Launched in 2014, the Fairchild initiative aims to revive the orchid population by having a new generation of seedlings planted in urban areas such as schools.

More than a century ago, before railroad expansion, the region's ecosystem was flush with orchids that blossomed on native trees, according to Fairchild.
