For most people, pulled pork is one of those dishes that's worth going out for because it seems like such a hassle to make at home — however, with the help of a handy slow cooker, this meaty comfort food dish is super easy to make.
Like most dishes that are made using a slow cooker, the prep is minimal and the bulk of the work is done by the appliance, so with some patience, the pork will be fork-tender and ready to pull without much effort at all.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 cup sweet chile sauce
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/2 cup spicy brown mustard
- 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 large yellow onion, roughly chopped
- 4 pounds pork butt, trimmed
- 1 bottle dark beer
DIRECTIONS
Add the ketchup, chile sauce, honey, mustard, vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, and red pepper flakes to a sauce pan over medium heat. Whisk the mixture together and let it come to a gentle boil, then remove the sauce from the heat and let it cool slightly.
Meanwhile, line the bottom of the slow cooker pot with chopped onion and rest the pork on top, then cover the meat with the sauce and turn it once to make sure everything is covered. Pour the beer over the meat and cover the pot. Cook on low for 9 hours.
When the pork is done cooking, carefully remove it from the pot and place it on a cutting board. Using two forks, gently pull the meat into shreds. Serve immediately.
