  • In 1837 The Royal Opera house was the first ever theatre to use limelight. Limelight comes from the mixing of oxygen and hydrogen and then adding real burning lime to achieve a bright light.
  • While its star performances can be sold out within hours, in the summer you can watch its performances live in squares around London!

  • Pick up Royal Opera House tickets after 10am on most Mondays for FREE lunchtime recitals. Perfect antidote to a tough day.
  • In 1837 the manager of the Theatre Royal (the modern Royal Opera House) pioneered the use of lamps brightened by the use of lime to create a spotlight effect, hence in the limelight.
  • Great view over Covent Garden from the terrace - go up the escalator & walk thru the cafe
  • Home of the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet. Prestigious productions, but tickets at all prices. Also lunchtime recitals and smaller productions in the Linbury Studio.
  • For excellent seats at decent prices try the front of the orchestra stalls or stalls circle

  • The Theatre Royal Covent Garden opened on this site in 1732, and hosted the first public piano performance in 1767. It burned down in 1808, again in 1857, and became the Royal Opera House in 1892.
  • If you eat at either of the restaurants (I like the Amphitheatre Restaurant) you get your table for the whole night so that you can have starters and main course before the performance, and then desse
  • Get here an hour before the opera starts to avoid the queues. Browse the programme, have a round of smoked salmon sandwiches & champagne & leisurely find your seat.
  • Great Student Standby offers, and free opera every Monday afternoon.
  • Get yourself onto their email list for the occasional amazing deal (eg best Orchestra Stalls seats for less than half price - 85 rather than the usual 180)
  • Can generally get same day tickets in person at the box office after 10 am on the same day. They reserve about 70-80 tickets which are released on the day of performance
  • Great outdoor terrasse with view on Covent Garden. You can also see where they make the costumes.
