John Besh is one of the most interesting and ambitious chefs in the Crescent City today. The American menu at this splendid eatery shows his love for, and understanding of, French, Italian, and high-level American cuisine, much of it interpreted with a New Orleans lilt. His dishes also always incorporate the finest local food that the Gulf has to offer, for example his crispy Louisiana pompano with mirliton and sunchokes. — Allison Beck

A New Korean Restaurant and an Irish Party - Haute Plates - August 2012 - New Orleans, LA
New Orleans has never had a lot of Korean restaurants. Until recently, the only full-time Korean place in the area was Korea House in Fat City. That changed about a month ago, when Little Korea opened at 3301 S. Claiborne Ave. It's a casual place with a fairly limited menu at the moment, but what I've seen is interesting enough that I'll likely be back. From the number of cars in the parking lot on the times when I've stopped by, I'm not alone in that sentiment.

Lesson Learned from Isaac - Happy Hour - August 2012
Thanks to Isaac, and we’ll be blaming him for many items over the next few weeks, I hope that the lessons of Katrina were strengthened.

The Rainy Season - Joie d'Eve - August 2012
As I write this, it’s raining. And, in fact, it has been raining every single day this month, it seems. I have had to wade to work on more than one occasion. I don’t even try to make outdoor plans this time of year, and my umbrella always seems to be exactly where I don’t need it (in my car if I’m in my office; in my office if I’m in my car). But given that we’re at the peak of the really bad part of hurricane season, I will gladly take a daily rainstorm over the worse alternatives.

BYOB Boxing at Friday Night Fights - After Hours - August 2012 - New Orleans, LA
If the prospect of boxing calls to mind old-fashioned images of the sweaty, dimly-lit gym or the cigar-chomping manager yelling from the turnbuckle, you might need to update your expectations a bit for this weekend’s Friday Night Fights on Freret Street. That’s because this wildly successful event also includes DJs and rappers, drag queens, a reggae band, dancing groups, a BYOB policy for whatever you want to haul in and the promise of knockouts in bikinis, if not in the ring.

Hurry Up and Wait - Uptown Life - August 2012 - New Orleans, LA
I spent over six hours yesterday in the hallways of the lobby of the New Orleans City Hall, all to ask two questions. As many of you may have had to do as well, I had to visit the Assessor’s office to re-fill out a Homestead Exemption and to ask a question as to how my home had been assessed. When I left the office at 3 p.m., there were as many people still waiting to be seen as had been in line all day.
