Recent Study Showcases Benefits of Eating Grains

Never feel guilty about eating grains again! In a new study conducted over five years with over 14,000 American adults, researchers compared people who regularly ate grains with those who did not. They concluded that those who regularly ate grains had overall better health quality and weight benefits than people who did not.

The study’s conclusions indicated that those who primarily ate grains had a higher nutrient intake, lower body weight, and overall better diet quality than that of people who do not eat grains. In terms of increased nutrient intake, those who ate grains had higher levels of fiber, calcium, iron, magnesium, vitamin D, and folic acid. In measuring body weight, researchers found that people who got the majority of their grains from pasta, cooked cereals, and rice weighed an average of seven pounds less and had a weight circumference of one inch smaller than those who do not eat grains. People who consumed grains also ate less saturated fats and sugars than those who did not.

The study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Food and Nutrition Sciences, also emphasized that many Americans are lacking in the specific grain nutrients, so by avoiding grains and having less nutrient intake, people can have a negative effect on their own health quality.
