Man Lauded For Buying An Elderly Woman's Groceries When Her Card Was Denied

One man's act of kindness has transformed from a quiet, selfless moment to a heroic act that's being lauded on the Internet.

Ryan O'Donnell , a father of two, was waiting in line at the grocery store in Wyoming, Australia, when he noticed that the elderly woman ahead of him was unable to pay for her groceries because her card kept getting denied. To spare her the embarrassment, O'Donnell gallantly paid for the woman's groceries himself and insisted that she not pay him back. The incident was captured on another customer's camera phone.

"I was just there in the grocery aisle or checkout with my kids and I saw the old lady having some trouble with the card," O'Donnell, 34, told Channel 9's The Today Show. "She swiped it quite a number of times and then they took her around to the front cigarette counter and got her to keep trying. By that stage my groceries had gone through and I went around and spoke to the young lady and said, 'How much is it?' and they said $44 or something... her card kept being declined due to insufficient funds so I said, 'Look, here's $50, just take it out of that.'"

O'Donnell later told press that the elderly woman "was getting confused" and that she reminded him of his grandmother.
