Mike's Mix: New Fashioned

Every week, Mike Augustyniak picks a new cocktail recipe from a local mixologist. This week he's taking a look at the New Fashioned from the PUBLIC kitchen + bar.

New Fashioned

2 oz. Bulleit Bourbon
3/4 oz. Aperol
1 orange slice
2 maraschino cherries
Dash of brown sugar
2-3 dashes of Fee Brothers Rhubarb Bitters

Muddle orange, cherry and dash of brown sugar in a bucket glass. Add Bulleit Bourbon, Aperol, Rhubarb Bitters and ice. Stir and serve.

Taste Test

You've heard of the Old Fashioned – it's been around for over 130 years, and the name refers to a style of cocktails first mixed up over 200 years ago.

Today you can find an updated version at PUBLIC kitchen + car in Lowertown St. Paul, Minn. called the New-Fashioned.

The difference between new and old comes by adding Aperol (an Italian aperitif) and substituting rhubarb bitters for the traditional Angostura bitters.

You'll notice a smoother (sweeter?) flavor to the New-Fashioned, that is still unmistakably old fashioned.
