Foursquare Tips

  • Be sure to ck out the 900 yr old oak
  • Take your time and walk everywhere. It's gorgeous. But watch out for the gators and bring bug spray!
  • The half-hour House Museum Tour takes visitors through the 1775-built guest quarters, the only part of the residence to survive (tours start at 12). Show yourself around the extensive formal gardens.
  • Charleston has a rich culinary history and it all began here! Penelope visited on Rice Harvest Day, a celebration that happens each year in September. The gardens here are beau-ti-ful!
  • And watch for BIG BLACK SNAKES. But the place is beautiful.
  • Look out for alligators. Walk down to the terracing.
  • Drive slowly when entering. Sheep roam free.

  • My favorite plantation. I've gone five times and it'll never be boring. Beautiful when flowers are in bloom. I had a great guide for the garden tour. Lots of history and original pieces in the house.

  • Day tours of this National Historic Landmark have long been popular, but few travelers know about the grounds kayak swamp tours.
  • Watch for snakes!
  • Middleton Place has the most beautiful grounds of any of Charleston's plantations, with stunning gardens on the marsh.
  • On hot summer days carriage tours often stop early in the day.
  • Walk around all of the gardens!!

  • Take a taxi instead of using one of the tour services. You need more than 4 hours to see anything and eat at the amazing restaurant
