How To Preserve An Open Bottle Of Wine

I get this question so often that I am sort of shocked that I haven't addressed it yet. It's perhaps one of the best questions about wine, but its simple answer often gets obscured by marketing pitches designed to solve a problem that you probably don't have.

Wine degrades, or oxidizes, due to the reaction between the delicate aromatic compounds in wine and oxygen. Heat speeds up these reactions. Excessive heat causes a whole slew of additional problems, but I'm making the assumption that you are careful enough not to cook your wine.
