What do you get when you combine a former food editor of the Austin Chronicle with a passion for pizza? One of the most heralded pizza spots in Texas. Jen Strickland must have had to forget everything she’d learned about the pitfalls and craziness of opening a restaurant during the decade she spent covering them for the Chronicle and Texas Monthly in order to take a leap of faith and try to open one with her husband Joseph Strickland and partner Terri Hannifin.

Or maybe she just knew the New York City slices she ate while attending NYU would inspire her own Austin pizzeria to greatness (there is a certain invincibility those slices can make you feel while eating one walking down the street Saturday Night Fever-style). The end result at Home Slice Pizza has been a South Austin smash: New York-style Neapolitan thin-crust slices and pies (try the pepperoni and mushroom) that just might inspire a South Congress strut, Tony Manero-style.

Foursquare Tips

  • For fans of New York-style pizza, Home Slice is as close as you can get in Austin, possibly thanks to yearly staff trips to the Big Apple. You know, for research. [Eater 38 Member]
  • Sit at the bar (first come, first served) and watch the pizza pros ply their trade. It's like a free show while you eat!
  • Skip the crowd. Call your order in and pick it up at the window. Eat anywhere you want.
  • The pepperoni and mushroom is heavenly! This is some top notch pizza! The vibe is really sick too! I found them during SXSW on my new supper app: http://supper.mx/places/home-slice-pizza-austin/
  • Awesome pizza. Don't pass this place up if you're in south Austin. Always crowded.
  • Authentic, New York-inspired pizza in Austin's super-cute South Congress neighborhood. P.S. Theyre hosting a Merge Records party this year during SXSW.
  • Don't go on Fri. unless you are prepared to wait at least 30-45 min. to sit down. FAIL
  • From the moment Home Slice opened its doors, it's been packed and for good reason. Genuine New York-style pizza made in an independent neighborhood pizzeria, by folks who know how it's done.
  • Best Slice of Pizza!
  • Austin's best pizza spot. Can get a little packed, but More Home Slice (next door on S. Congress) is a good option for a slice or take-out when the original location is too packed.
  • There was a drunk female shouting at the home slice building. It was closed and I think she was pissed. Or she had the place confused with this "Daniel" she kept screaming. It was a little funny.
  • Hands down the best pizza in Austin. Be prepared for a larger pizza than you might expect. A large anywhere else is a medium here.
  • Additional parking for Home Slice around the corner at Congress Ave. Baptist Church. You're welcome.
  • Park at the Baptist Church next door.
  • Cute back patio & bar (to cool your heels when there's a wait). Try the Sausage, Ricotta & Red Pepper pizza. Or if you're feelin veg: White Pie w Spinach, Garlic, Ollive Oil, Ricotta & Mozzarella.
  • Try the Meat Calzone with pepperoni & sausage that is stuffed with ricotta cheese and mozzarella and served with a side of marinara sauce.
  • Try the margherita pizza and the garlic knots. Get a Shiner Bock on draft.
  • Slices are now available almost all the time next door @ More Homeslice...but if you have time spring for the whole pie! Best pizza leftovers ever!
  • Love this pizza
  • Got 10% off for taking a big of my rice krispy treat then shared it with a random chick in line! People in Austin are great.
