It’s not easy to open an immensely successful restaurant from scratch in Los Angeles, but that’s exactly what chefs David Myers and Kuniko Yagi did when they opened this Century City hotspot in January 2013. The Silk Road-inspired restaurant is not only a great place to sip a craft cocktail and nosh on snacks like fried oysters and chili crab toast, it’s also an experience for all your senses. Myers (who rose to fame with Comme Ça and the Michelin-starred Sona) traveled Japan extensively before opening the restaurant where he fused the finest attributes of Japanese dining (the room is scented with hinoki, a Japanese cedar, and the patio resembles a Japanese garden) with the most fun aspects of American dining. Several of the dishes, including the hinoki(Japanese cypress)-scented black cod with sweet potato and pistachio, coconut-curried mussels with sausage and cauliflower, and lobster roll with green curry and Thai basil, are already signature menu items. 

 

 

Foursquare Tips

  • Housed in an upscale 42-storey tower. The menu is inspired by the Silk Road, try the grilled drunken duck breast and hinoki-scented black cod served with a piece of the namesake hinoki cypress wood.
  • A fusion of complex, ritualized Japanese kaiseki cuisine with modern California small-plates cooking, like the black cod served under smoldering sheets of the Japanese cedar hinoki.
  • My favorite meal of 2013! Every dish was amazing especially the crab cakes and cocktails.
  • You may look like an idiot trying to open the door, so let someone do it for you. Even if you do end up looking like an idiot, the meal will be worth it.
  • Really amazing food. Everything tasted delicious! Patio is cute. My favs on the menu were the mussels, salmon and pumpkin toast. And for dessert the miso mochi is a MUST!

  • I love how negronis are the new trendy cocktail. Four delicious takes on the classic here. Highly recommend the Kingston negroni if you want a tropical twist.
  • Always a sweet ending at Hinoki & the Bird. Kalamansi-shiso sorbet, black sesame ice cream with lemon and hibiscus, miso ice cream with butterscotch and togarashi, and matcha zephyr.
  • Very trendy place. Take the Black Code.
  • Great drinks and apps. +2 pts if you spot someone from CAA.
  • Miso mochi! Black cod! Also read the sign before you just pull into the structure. Probably parked in the wrong one cause it was $28.
  • Great specialty cocktails and one of a kind entrees.
  • Lunch options were impressive. Great service. Try the crab toast and curry monkfish!
  • Try the cotton cheesecake when done so yummy!
  • Fantastic food & great space! Highlights include crab toast, pumpkin toast, beef tartare & black cod. Kale salad was bland, lobster roll was nothing special & didn't love desserts. Great meal overall!
  • Food is amazing. Lobster Roll, Chili Crab Toast and Skate Wing are a must.
  • THE most perfect meal in LA of 2013. If you can handle the heat (and you're Asian), you must get the Sambal Skate Wing #ToDieFor
