Falling leaves and pumpkin-filled windows mean only one thing: Halloween is right around the corner. Highlighting spicy fall flavors and dark spirits, this seasonal cocktail is candy for big kids. But fear not, clove is widely known to alleviate toothaches and help with digestion (in case you eat too much of the sweet stuff).

INGREDIENTS

For the cocktail:

  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • 1 1/2 ounces fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ounce clove simple syrup
  • 3 dashes of bitters
  • Lemon peel twist, for garnish

For the clove simple syrup:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 ounces whole cloves

DIRECTIONS

To make the Clove Simple Syrup:

Mix together the sugar, water, and cloves together in a saucepan. Over medium heat, bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes.

Let cool overnight at room temperature. Strain off the clove.

You can store simple syrup in a bottle refrigerated for up to four weeks.

For the cocktail:

Fill a rocks glass with ice.

Build the drink by adding bourbon, fresh lemon juice, clove simple syrup and bitters together, in that order. Stir.

Serve the cocktail with the twist of lemon garnish.
