Gramercy Tavern is among the finest of the new wave of classic American restaurants (remember that Tom Colicchio was founding partner and chef here before he left to open his own restaurants and become a TV star). With Danny Meyer running the show and Michael Anthony (who previously spent time at Daniel and helped Dan Barber develop his influential style at Blue Hill at Stone Barns) in control in the kitchen, the restaurant continues to excel at serving refined American cuisine without pretension. Anthony has become known for his simply prepared fish dishes in particular, such as flounder with cabbage, leeks, olives, and oyster mushrooms , as well as butternut squash custard with carrots and hazelnuts, and pork loin and belly with navy beans, tasso, and kale. From the murals that wrap the dining room to the lavish floral arrangements and from the copper-and-candle glow to the reputation for flawless service, a meal at Gramercy Tavern is one you’re not likely to forget any time soon.

Eater
The unofficial official First Restaurant of New York. Though its formal dining room is a bit too too for Eater 38 contention, the front room and its seasonal American menu wins. [Eater 38 Member]

CNN Eatocracy: It's one of the New York's most beloved restaurants -- and for good reason with its luxurious yet homey atmosphere. Everything's seasonal and you really can't go wrong.

The restaurant’s no-reservations front room is that rare space that’s sexy enough for a date but comfortable enough for your grandparents, and the menu is so thoughtful it’s like an act of generosity.

It's tough to beat 2005 in Bordeaux…opt for the Chateau Monbrison, a great value! The trademark Margaux intense fragrance and tobacco-sour cherry flavors are in evidence. Let it breathe if possible…
Epicurious
Bold, seasonal dishes are the main event at this classic NYC restaurant. Sit in the front room for a fun, casual atmosphere, or get more intimate over the white-linen tablecloths in the back.

Michael Anthony's dishes are at once simple and striking. Sink your teeth into the rabbit fettucine, for example, and you’ll taste every flavor: the tangy parsnips, the earthy Brussels sprouts.

We enjoy the pairing of classic American fare and an upscale, refined setting. We also like how the staff is savvy about the local ingredients that many of the dishes are crafted from.

One of the best in New York. Don’t have a reservation? Eat in the bar area and enjoy the same standout service as in the dining room. We love the Sea Bass and the Pasture Raised Chicken.
