There’s a special place in heaven for a man who makes a sandwich the way he’d like to eat it. Dave Bagan is going to heaven. Go to Dave's Hoagies. Get the Italian (Genoa salami, hot soppressata, and hot coppa) with the works (sharp provolone, chopped Romaine, tomato slices, shaved red onions, roasted red peppers, chopped hot cherry peppers, diced artichoke hearts, all dusted with Parmesan). Lovers of the White House Special in Atlantic City won’t find a sandwich that equals it in length, but you can finally get a taste of that classic right here in Manhattan. It’s a great sandwich made by a nice guy in a spot that if there’s anything good about this world, will have to fend off customers. — Arthur Bovino, 5/23/2013

Foursquare Tips

  • Excellent Philly-style sandwiches in the Financial District. Make sure to get yours loaded with "the works," a tangy mix of vinegar, cheese, and roasted and pickled vegetables.
  • Expensive - skip it.
  • Dave is the man! Everything on the menu is great, but try the imported italian tuna. Make sure you get the works. Riquisimo!
  • What to get: Italian, $11.
  • New York Magazine Cheap Eats issue recommends the Italian ($11), "a fat, drippy, South Jersey hoagie served on a bona fide New York hero roll."
  • Dave's Italian blows the Wawa #10 out of the water.
  • Just get THE WORKS ('cause it works!)
  • Delicious Italian subs and friendly service. The veggies are really fresh and the house sauce is delicious.
  • Meatball parm ftw.
  • Why are these sandwiches so expensive?
  • Must go in Fidi. Best heros in the city. Super fresh, super tasty. Finally a place where their special sauce is not ketchip and mayo mixed.
  • Dave's Italian with "The Works" is filling & has a nice spicy kick to it. This isn't a franchise. Dave (originally from Philly) himself makes your hoagies. If only he toasts the bread. Wall St prices.
  • Good hoagie bread. A little pricey but a satisfied customer. Would go back.
  • These are delicious and sizable Italian hoagies. The flavor makes up for the slightly high prices, and everyone here is very friendly. Go with a roast beef with the works!
  • Great hoagies but the prices are a bit high for your basic cold sandwiches.
  • Cheesesteaks and Tastykakes!
  • Great owner! Hoagies are his passion.
  • This place is a bit pricey but the sandwiches are huge & very filling!
