I’m not certain March went out like a lion (does the Angriest Whopper count?), but April definitely has come in like a lamb (burger). They’re everywhere on this month’s list of 60+ specials, and they look great.
Instead of bowing to tradition and going Greek, the Burger Lounge chain is topping its grass-fed lamb patty with Mexican Asadero cheese, jalapeňo relish, roasted tomato and tomato aïoli. Another West Coast chain, The Counter, has a Big & Bold Lamburger with a third-pound patty, herbed goat cheese, grilled red onion, spinach, tomato and spicy tomato jam on a ciabatta bun.
Burger Revolution in Belleville, Ont., calls its lamb burger The Liberator. Toppings include Brie cheese, pickled red onion, grilled asparagus and sweet-pea mayo. Burger, Tap & Shake in Washington, D.C., has My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 for April. The char-grilled lamb patty is topped with cucumber, tomato, kalamata olive relish, feta cheese and rosemary aïoli.
In Atlanta (and Birmingham and Nashville), Flip Burger Boutique tops its Spring Lamb Burger with garlic-pickled carrots, shaved onion and fennel; herb mi; red-wine vinaigrette and goat cheese. It’s not just an American trend: Burgermeester in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is menuing a Love Burger in April. It has lamb, pickled red onion, fig jam and French goat cheese.
But what does spring bring other than lambs? Yep, baseball. Burger chain Mooyah calls its April special The Full Count. It’s a giant all-beef hot dog topped with American cheese, bacon, relish, diced onion, ketchup and mustard. Mixed-Up Burgers in Grand Prairie, Texas, keeps the burger patty on its Chicago Hamdog but adds a Chicago-style hot dog on top. TAG Burger Bar in Denver goes double-meat, too. Its Take Me Out to the Ballgame Burger” has an Angus beef patty, Nathan’s beef hot dog, relish, mustard, ketchup and onion on a pretzel bun.
Of course, there are plenty of April Burger Specials that don’t conform to any theme. Consider the Zac Brown Burger at Burger 55 in Penicton, B.C. That would be a chicken-fried beef patty on a sesame-seed bun with mayo, country gravy, bacon collared greens, tomato and Cheddar cheese. There’s no way to pigeonhole the Baba Gloria’s Burger at The Cannibal Cafe in Vancouver, B.C. The build is a pork patty, crispy perogi, Canadian Cheddar, lemon & chive sour cream, caramelized onion, bacon, lettuce, pickle and sauerkraut.
And then there is The Super Duper Meaty Cheesy Fusion Burger at Burger Fusion in LaCrosse. Wis. Ready? It’s ground Angus and ground buffalo fused together and topped with corned beef, Black Forest ham, bacon, pepper jack, Cheddar, mozzarella, and caramelized onions on a potato bun. Yeah.
So that’s just a dozen examples from this months list. There are 50 more burger specials that are just as interesting as these. You can find the complete list here, thanks to support from sponsor Reinhart Foodservice. Please visit their site, too. Have a buys, profitable spring.
