You know a place has to be pretty spectacular when it lands on a list of the best restaurants in the country after only being open for 10 months — but, if anyone is up to the task, Daniel Boulud is the chef and restaurateur to do it. Boulud Sud, the culinary legend's seventh New York City restaurant, is a celebration of the Mediterranean, specifically highlighting the cuisines of Sardinia, Gibraltar, Greece, Tunisia, and Turkey. The flavors and dishes of these areas are blended to create dishes that are new in concept but familiar in spirit, such as sea urchin and crab tartine with green olives, lemon cream, and seaweed rye bread; and zaatar baked cod with mussels and Greek yogurt. The décor in this sprawling space (especially by New York City standards) reflects the same coastal sensibility as the food, decorated with warm wood furnishings, buttery yellow walls, and plush banquettes printed with stripes in hues of blue, yellow, and white. Attached to Boulud Sud is Épicerie Boulud, an eat-in and takeout market where customers can purchase oysters, house-made charcuterie, soups, salads, breads, pastries, and other sweets.

  • Try the Grapefruit Givr, stuffed with rose-scented loukoum and topped with flossy halvah cotton candy and black-and-white sesame tuile. Its one of our #100best dishes and drinks of 2011.
  • Recommended: Sardine escabeche, octopus, squid, Iberico ham, spiced duck, crisp artichokes, Andalusian gazpacho, saffron linguine, scallops, loup de mer, lamb, charred wagyu, grapefruit givr.
  • Of the three Daniel Boulud restaurants around the corner, this is the best. Try the beautiful ratatouille with a poached egg on top and make sure to save room for dessert (seriously, do it).
  • A solid choice for date night on the UWS, or a meal before a show at Lincoln Center. Even the most exotic dishes like the zaatar baked cod have that signature Boulud touch. [Eater 38 Member]
  • Daniels homage to Mediterranean cuisine is the great Frenchmans most vibrant new establishment in years. One of Adam Platt's best new restaurants for 2012!
  • Best place to dine on the upper west. Brunch or dinner,make sure to get the bronzino & Mediterranean platter. A visit to chef Sud's kitchen is always blissful.
  • Try the Pimenton Spiced Steak and Eggs. It's phenomenal. Also good: Peekytoe Crab Tartine and the Lebanese "Awamat" Doughnuts. Save some of the doughnuts for dessert though!
  • The lamb burger is a very rich and tasty choice for brunch. Get the sunny side egg with it if you dare. The burger quickly turns into a mess if you do. A delicious, delicious mess.
  • Great apps and entrees, but what you really want is dessert. Get the grapefruit givr.
  • Honeycomb and lavender infused gin with lemon. This cocktail is to die for!
  • I don't typically do cocktails but here I make an exception and get the te From The Field - gin, honeycomb, lavender, and lemon. It's a badass and refreshing at the same time.
  • Chicken tagine is excellent.
  • Stop apologizing for taking away my empty wine glass!
  • Latte + pain au chocolate for a good morning
  • Sardine or Anchovy app is to DIE for!! Gareth, the maitre d' makes the place feel like home
  • Excellent Mediterranean cooking. Upscale, so wear a button down shirt. A lot of theater goers. Moderately expensive. We loved the Persian spiced day boat scallops ($32).
  • Specializing in lamb and grilled whole fish, this luncheon spot sits next to picerie Boulud, a great spot for all of your breads, soups, and charcuterie, that turns into an oyster bar come nightfall.
  • If you ate a meal that changed your life, you probably had it here. Be blown away by the Octopus a la Plancha and the Lamb Loin. Go early for the Pre-Theater menu.
  • Boulud Sud is Daniel Boulud's surprising and fresh take on pan-Mediterranean food, of a high enough quality to feel like an occasion but not as formal as some of Boulud's other establishments.
