Since 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month has been recognized from September 15 to October 15. There are celebrations during this time to recognize and celebrate the diversity that helps to make Baltimore and these United States the melting pot of uniqueness and acceptance. It is a time to celebrate the anniversaries of independence for Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile. Here is a listing of a few of the celebrations that will take place in the Baltimore area.

The goal of the Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Awards is to recognize exemplary Hispanics who have made significant contributions in improving the quality of life for their communities. Nominations are accepted in early September and the nominees attend a reception sponsored by the mayor and the Baltimore City Hispanic Commission at which the winners are awarded.

According to the website, this night will feature a great night of music, art, tradition and dance. There will be live music performed by Pablo Antonio y La Firma and traditional dance performances by Bailes de Mi Tierra, and so much more. Attendees will be able to view all of the animals at the aquarium. There will be a special bilingual dive presentation.

The non-profit organization Education Based Latino Outreach (EBLO), first started in 1980, offers many services to the Hispanic community. The organization will hold a festival featuring continuous live entertainment from bands and dance companies. The celebration will be held at the intersection of Thames and South Caroline Streets.

This is an opportunity for the Hispanic community to focus upon health. There will be free vision exams with low-cost eyeglasses available as well as free preventive health screenings to include blood pressure and glucose readings. This event is held on the first Monday of every month.
