My favorite cocktails are the kind in which the mixer is as deeply delicious and nearly as high-proof as the base liquor. In this category, the rusty nail does not disappoint. The honeyed, spiced cocktail is extremely high-impact and goes down dangerously easily, which makes sense, when you consider that you’re basically just downing a glass of Scotch whisky.

Made with our favorite honey-scented liqueur, Drambuie, rusty nail cocktails are a favorite classic cocktail that seems to be making a comeback. Popular in the ‘50s, this drink fell out of favor in the 1980s, but has seen a resurgence since the rise of craft cocktail and classic cocktail culture. While I prefer the original to any variations, many cocktail bars around the country have started to play on this Scotch-and-Scotch-infusion recipe.

This rusty nail drink recipe, following, is geared towards those who like just a little bit of sweet in their smoky. If you’re someone who prefers a more sugary touch, however, we suggest a 1:1 ratio of Drambuie to Scotch.
