Brisk temperatures and sunny weather invite families to get outside and enjoy Charlotte's typically wonderful and lengthy autumn. Lots of families celebrate the season with trips to local farms where they can pick out a pumpkin for Halloween, meet farm animals and explore a corn maze. It adds up to a full day of family fun in the great outdoors. One of the largest corn mazes in the Southeast is found just north of town in one of Mecklenburg County's public parks. Wandering through seven acres of tall corn, more than two miles of paths are designed to be navigated in one to two hours, with clues and puzzle pieces to find along the way. Lots of other activities are available at the historic park, including hayrides, mini-mazes for the younger kids, hiking, visits to the historic farm with living history demonstrations, cornhole games and pumpkin picking. The Amazing Maze is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through November 2, with Family Friendly Flashlight Mazes on Friday and Saturday nights from 6 to 9 p.m.

Monroe's favorite corn maze is open to the public on weekends through November 16, including evenings when you can explore the maze by flashlight. In addition to the corn maze, admission includes lots of other farm activities including a hay ride, grain bin slide, tumbleweed roll and kiddie corral and play area, plus admission to the animal barn to see the Three Little Pigs, an antique rail car and paddleboat rides. For a small additional charge, families can try target shooting with BB guns or bow and arrow, fossil mining, choose a Halloween pumpkin or enjoy spooky stories and s'mores around a bonfire. The super scary 13th Acre haunted trail is also located at Aw Shucks!

Just over the South Carolina line, the Anne Spring Close Greenway celebrates fall with a family festival on Saturdays and Sundays through October 26. Activities covered by the festival admission include a four-acre corn maze, plus farm animals, pedal carts, a corn crib to dig in, cornhole games, rubber duck races and a cow train, as well as horse rides on a lead rope and kayaking on Lake Haigler. Hop aboard the free wagon ride out to the pumpkin patch where you can choose your jack-o-lantern for Halloween. The Greenway hosts numerous other fun activities year-round, including hiking on 40 miles of trails, mountain biking, camping, fishing, trail rides and geocaching.

This family farm in the Ballantyne neighborhood offers fun activities daily through November 8. The five-acre corn maze features an image of Edgar Allan Poe in 2014; explore it by flashlight on Friday and Saturday nights. Other family activities at the farm include mini-mazes, sing-a-long hayrides, rubber duck races, visits with the chickens and other farm animals and covered tables for your own picnic. The farm's sales tent offers ciders, salsas, breads, jams and other goodies, as well as cold slushies and hot coffee and cocoa. The Hall family also has a big field of pumpkins where you can pick out your favorite for Halloween.

Located just 15 minutes from Charlotte, this fourth generation Gaston County farm practices sustainable farming practices that date to the early 1900s. Its annual Harvest Festival, held Saturdays and Sundays throughout October, features lots of kids-oriented activities. The $5 admission includes a corn maze, a horse-drawn hay ride and an ear of corn or cone of feed for the animals in the barnyard, plus a hay bale mountain and slide. For a small additional fee, kids can enjoy a hand-led pony ride. The farm stand offers farm-raised eggs and meat, and you can choose your pumpkin from the Lewis Farm's large pumpkin patch.
