Have you ever met anyone that doesn’t like ice cream? Probably not; ice cream is one of the most popular desserts in the world. Billions of gallons are consumed each year, and Americans eat more than any other country; the average American eats 48 pints per year! With a resurgence in the popularity of all things homemade, and a growing interest in artisanal frozen treats, more and more people are trying their hand at homemade ice cream. But what if you don’t have an ice cream maker? We’ve rounded up 8 delicious ice cream recipes that you make, sans ice cream machine.
There are two basic methods when it comes to making ice cream at home without a machine. If you have a blender or food processor, you can combine your ingredients to make an ice cream base, freeze the base until solid, and then purée frozen pieces of ice cream base until they are the consistency of soft-serve ice cream. At this point you can either serve the ice cream or store it in an airtight container in the freezer.
If you don’t have a blender or food processor, combine your ingredients to make an ice cream base, pour them into a wide shallow dish, and put the dish in the freezer. Then, periodically check on your ice cream, stirring it thoroughly each time you check it, until it is the consistency of soft serve ice cream. Much like the blender method, you can either serve your ice cream at this point or freeze it in an airtight container for later.
If you want to get creative and add things like caramel, chocolate chips, or cookie pieces to your ice cream, it’s best to add them after your ice cream reaches the soft serve consistency, before it is stored in the freezer.
Whatever your preferences and supplies, you’re sure to find something refreshing and delicious among these 8 ice cream recipes to make at home.
