Foursquare Tips

  • The zoo opened in 1889 whenbusinessman George V. Gress purchased a bankrupt traveling circus & donated the animals to Atlanta. In 1999 the zoo joined only 2 other zoos in housing giant pandas.
  • Zoo Atlanta: One of the Southeast's top destinations for wildlife and family fun!
  • Fall is a great time to visit the zoo - the animals love the cooler days and are frisky.
  • Free parking!
  • What trip to any place could be done without a zoo trip?
  • The season pass is worth every penny! It costs less than two trips, and allows you to make short visits without feeling guilty about not seeing everything every time.
  • One of the 6 must-see Atlanta attractions included in the Atlanta CityPASS. CityPASS is a great way to visit Atlanta & save on admission prices. For purchase at the link. p.s. Say hi to the giraffes!
  • Feed the Parakeets! Its so cool, they buzz your head and eat right from your hand...
  • If you want to buy panda gifts, do so at the gift shop right by the panda exhibit as the main gift shop at the entrance is strangely devoid of all very many panda items.
  • Zoo Atlanta is not just the pride of our city, it is one of the most respected zoos in the nation/world. The conservation, husbandry and preservation efforts here are wonderful!
  • Pick an overcast day. The park is empty!!! On a Saturday!!!!
  • When the city's outdated zoo was named one of the country's 10 worst in the 80s, Willie B. came to the rescue and stole our hearts. In 2000, more than 8,000 mourners joined for a tearful memorial.
  • Go see the life-sized statue of Willie B, the famous silverback gorilla who served as an icon and ambassador to Atlanta for decades. He was named after 6 term mayor William B. Hartsfield.
  • Train ride is super short!
  • Zoo Membership! This is a GREAT zoo with fabulous events throughout the year that will keep you coming back. Membership will $ave you money!
  • Days with light rain are the BEST. We don our rain boots and go looking for the biggest puddles. The animals are more active and it feels like a private viewing with no one else around.
  • In Atlanta, it's illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or street lamp. (Yes, still.)
  • Did you know? When it opened in 1889, the zoo's collection of abandoned circus animals featured a jaguar, a hyena, a bear, a raccoon, an elk, a gazelle, a Mexican hog, lionesses, pumas, camels &snakes
  • PANDAS!!!!!!!!!!!
