Winemaker's Notes

This is no shrinking violet, shucks gee whiz I think that Ill pour myself into a corner I am such a complete wimp kind of wine. The wine may in fact approach quasi-Ravenswoodian levels of over-the-top vinous bravado; the long and cool growing season brought this Major Barbera to a level of exquisite and complete ripeness whilst retaining the characteristic bracing I needed that acid levels that make the pride of Alba such a thrilling vino da cucina... Very intense berry fruit - blackberry leading in pack followed by a strong field of black raspberry, Montmorency cherry and black and red licorice.

About the Region

An immense expanse of wine-growing real estate, covering portions of six counties between Santa Barbara and the San Francisco Bay Area and including more than 100,000 acres of vineyards, the Central Coast region includes the Santa Maria Valley, the Santa Ynez Valley and Monterey viticultural areas, and more than 20 other appellations. Chardonnay is the main grape planted, but there are scores of others, from albariño to zinfandel, with such rarities as counoise, mondeuse, and vermentino in between.
