Why You Should Think Twice Before Buying Generic Pasta Sauce
By C.A. Pinkham
There's nothing wrong with pre-made foods, and you shouldn't feel bad about using store-bought pasta sauce. However, you should stick to name brands rather than generic versions.
Many food items have little difference between name brands and generic versions. However, generic pasta sauce is made to be as bland as possible and doesn't taste as good.
Some major pasta sauce brands have their drawbacks, too, and tend to be loaded with sugar, corn syrup, salt, and preservatives that give them a slightly metallic, chemical taste.
These problems are amplified in generic, store brands, which often contain all the preservatives and little of the tomato flavor you'd get from even the least popular name brands.
Small-batch and well-regarded brands tend to taste better and contain less sugar and salt. Organic brands tend to taste better because they use better olive oil and more spices.
You can also forgo the canned sauce and make your own to control every aspect of your sauce to your liking, including the ingredient quality, herbs and spices, and texture.
