Why You Should Rethink Using Aluminum Foil At Your Next Grilling Session
By Stacie Adams
For many, aluminum foil is the go-to accompaniment for grilling, but it can have downsides when it comes to environmental sustainability and may even pose health risks.
Because aluminum foil covered in grease can possibly cause contamination, it isn’t accepted at recycling centers. Instead, it’s discarded and ends up in a landfill.
Trace amounts of aluminum can be found in some meats, vegetables, and dairy products. Luckily, the body only absorbs trace amounts, so it usually doesn’t pose a risk.
However, certain cooking tools and techniques can increase the aluminum content in the foods you eat. This includes acidic foods, seasonings like salt, and high temperatures.
To offset the potential risks of grilling with aluminum foil, turn toward more sustainable grilling accouterments like reusable grill baskets.
