Why You Should Always Use Gel Food Coloring For Vibrant Buttercream
By Stacie Adams
Buttercream frosting is a must for creating delicious and beautiful baked goods. If you really want your frosting colors to pop, gel-based food coloring is the way to go.
Using a gel-type food coloring ensures that your buttercream retains its luscious, thick texture. Liquid-based dyes can cause the icing to become overly watery.
Gel products are very potent and concentrated, so you only need a small amount to make stunning shades. This allows you to use less, stretch the product, and save money.
It's best to add gel colorings in small increments. Start with one or two drops of color and observe the shade as you add more to avoid color mishaps.
Take note of how many drops of coloring you add to the frosting to replicate that same shade if necessary. You can also combine gel colors to create various hues.
Deeper, darker colors can be trickier to achieve. Reserve small portions of buttercream for experimentation before dyeing (and possibly ruining) your entire batch.
