A stomach virus or food poisoning can be brutal, and although it’s not a cure, plain white rice can help alleviate many of their worst gastrointestinal symptoms. Per WebMD, brown rice may be higher in nutrients than white rice, but it's also more difficult for your body to digest, making an unhappy tummy even unhappier.
Plain white rice is known for slowing down the body's digestive system, which works to your advantage if you have diarrhea, and according to Healthline, rice water also helps. Boil one cup of rice in two cups of water for 10 minutes, strain into a large glass, and drink the water to aid in avoiding dehydration.
White rice is easily digestible, and adding a little salt will help your body hold onto water, which is the best way to avoid getting dehydrated, a genuine concern when you're down with a stomach bug. Like rice, ginger is also a well-known remedy to alleviate stomach distress, and combining the two by adding fresh ginger to your rice or rice water can also offer fast relief.
