Why It's So Much Harder To Get A Costco Membership In The U.K.

An American Costco membership will get you into the majority of Costco stores around the world, but if you're living in the United Kingdom, getting a membership has its obstacles.
There are 29 Costco locations across the United Kingdom, and according to the Costco U.K. website, memberships to those stores are only available to certain groups of people.
In the U.K., wholesale stores like Costco have to comply with the U.K.'s wholesale store laws, which make membership only accessible to those working for select business sectors.
While Costco may cater more to businesses than consumers in the U.K., employees in certain professions can still get individual memberships.
According to the Costco U.K. website, anyone who currently works for or has retired from the government is eligible to apply for a membership.
Healthcare professionals and financial service providers are also eligible, and if you don't fit any of these categories, you can be brought in as a guest by another member.
