What's The Best Way To Cook Honeynut Squash For Utmost Flavor?
By Laura Zbinden
While you may already know how to cook many winter squashes, such as butternut, acorn, and spaghetti squash, there's a new kind you may not have seen before: honeynut squash.
Honeynut squash is a smaller, sweeter cross between buttercup and butternut squash. It can be cooked similarly to butternut squash and used in many of the same recipes.
The best way to cook honeynut squash is to roast it in the oven. This softens its flesh and caramelizes its natural sugars to bring out its characteristic sweet and nutty flavor.
Leave it in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 40 minutes. You can amplify its sweetness with warm spices and sugar or complement it with savory flavors.
If you want a sweet flavor profile, coat the squash with brown sugar, butter, and a drizzle of maple syrup. You can also use sugar, cinnamon, and butter for a dessert-like treat.
A great savory combination is thyme, rosemary, and garlic, along with butter or olive oil. Top the gourd with parmesan or pecorino cheese to enhance its natural buttery flavor.
