What's The Best Alcohol For Spiking Your Holiday Eggnog With?
By Jessica Fleming-Montoya
Spiked eggnog recipes often call for brandy, whiskey, or rum. While the type of alcohol you choose is ultimately up to your preference, some work better than others.
When making eggnog, use a darker alcohol since it tends to have a richer flavor profile. Lighter alcohols only add booze without really enhancing the flavor.
Brandy has sweet notes that complement the drink while adding a kick from the alcohol. Bourbon is smoother than whiskey and infuses notes of oak, vanilla, and caramel.
Dark liquors contain congeners, which impart color and unique tasting notes and are generally picked up during the fermentation, distilling, and aging processes.
Go for a liquor with a higher ABV. The more alcoholic the liquor is, the better it can cut through the richness and sweetness of your drink to balance the eggnog's flavor.
