What Makes Creamed Tuna Different From The Classic Salad?
By Madalyn Mackarey
Instead of using your canned tuna for a classic, cold tuna salad, try transforming it into a hearty, savory meal for dinnertime by making its warm counterpart: creamed tuna.
Rather than draining the tuna and mixing it into a salad, creamed tuna comes together in a saucepan along with a few ingredients that create a delicious, easy cream sauce.
Their different preparations and contrasting ingredients also make for two different textures. Tuna salad offers a crunchy bite, while creamed tuna is thick and velvety.
Creamed tuna has only two components at its most basic level — tuna and a cream sauce made from a roux. Start your roux by melting butter in a saucepan and combining it with flour.
Gradually pour in some milk while continuously stirring and whisking until the mixture thickens up for the right texture. This roux is essential and gives the dish its creaminess.
Then, add your drained tuna can to the saucepan and heat everything together. Creamed tuna is commonly served over starches like toast, biscuits, or rice for a more filling meal.
