What Makes A New York Style-Hot Dog So Legendary?
By Riya Anne Polcastro
New York's iconic hot dogs are a big part of the Big Apple's food culture, and the reason they're so irresistible is because of their toppings, buns, and "dirty water."
The "dirty water" may look murky, but it's loaded up with a delicious combination of spices like cumin, nutmeg, and red pepper that give it a very interesting color.
Some stands even include ingredients like vinegar, tomato sauce, sauerkraut, and onions. The flavor left behind by the preceding batch of hot dogs also adds to the unique taste.
New York's hot dogs also come with onion sauce, which is a thick and chunky condiment that was popularized by hot dog purveyor Sabrett.
Other common toppings generally ordered at New York hot dog stands include sauerkraut and special spicy brown deli-style mustard.
When it comes to the buns, steamed buns are typical because the soft white bread will soak up all those tasty juices from the dirty water.
