What Is A Swedish Apple Pie And What Makes It Distinct?
By Camryn Teder
Swedish apple pie is an American-style version of a popular Swedish dessert known as smulpaj, or, crumble pie. It usually includes berries and comes without a pie shell.
Smulpaj isn't really "pie” since it doesn't come in a pastry shell at all. Instead, the crust forms from a butter mixture that's poured on top of the apples and baked.
Swedish apple pie is also a crustless pie, but it’s made exclusively with apples and sugar. The apple filling also comes topped with sugar and butter to create a crispy top layer.
This dish is more akin to an apple crisp or crumble than a pie. It’s warm, rich, and easy to make, making it a great option for novice bakers — just dump everything into a pan.
These two desserts share some similarities and both can be made with a wide variety of apples, from Granny Smith to Gala, so long as they won't become mushy as they bake.
