What Actually Is Holland Cream And How Do You Use It?
By Arianna Endicott
If you've ever wondered what goes into cream-filled donuts, or you want to whip up your own homemade batch of sweet treats, you may have come across recipes for Holland cream.
Dutch desserts often rely on the pastry cream as an important component of treats like roombroodje (sweet bread paired with cream) or tompouce (layers of puff pastry and cream).
This fluffy cream is used in various baked goods and pastries. It's also simple to make at home, and the start of the process is similar to making simple syrup.
Start by heating one part of water and two parts of granulated white sugar in a saucepan. Remove it from the heat after it has come to a boil and the sugar has dissolved.
After the sugar water mix has completely cooled down, add vegetable shortening, oil, and vanilla extract. Combine the ingredients in an electric mixer at a high speed.
While it's mixing, slowly add in powdered sugar. This results in a thick and fluffy cream that can be used to fill donuts, cream horns, or a homemade copycat of a Hostess cupcake.
