Wegmans Issues Diavolo Pasta Sauce Recall For A Fishy Reason
By Alli Neal
Wegman's 24-ounce jars of Italian Classics Diavolo pasta sauce are being recalled for potentially containing anchovy without the appropriate warning label.
The sauce was sold in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia from April 3 to May 16, 2023.
The jars have a printed expiration date of March 31, 2025, the UPC 077890222409, and the jar code F0589. If you've purchased one, you can return it for a full refund.
The recall was initiated on May 17, 2023, by LiDestri Foods, the private label and contract manufacturer of Wegmans brand Diavolo sauce.
An investigation found that the incident was caused by "a temporary breakdown in LiDestri Foods' packaging process." No illnesses have yet been reported as a result of the mixup.
According to a Wegmans representative, the sauce (which is listed as vegan) does not contain anchovies but may have been exposed during production without being properly labeled.
