Upgrade Canned Biscuits By Transforming Them Into Fry Bread
By Arianna Endicott
A store-bought can of biscuits is a quick and easy way to add a side to your dinner's main course. If you feel like getting creative, you can use them to make fry bread.
Fry bread is similar to flatbread but fried in oil instead of baked. The Navajo invented it during the "Long Walk" when they were forcibly moved from Arizona to New Mexico.
Fry bread was created from the flour, sugar, and lard rations. Today, the bread is a symbol of the tribe's perseverance and is also a delicious and filling food.
Use a rolling pin to spread the dough of each biscuit out flat. Heat your frying oil on your stovetop — it will be hot enough when you insert a wooden skewer and see bubbles form.
Carefully place the rolled-out dough into the oil and allow it to fry up. Flip it with tongs when the underside is golden brown, which generally takes about 10 to 20 seconds.
Once both sides have fried up, remove the bread from the oil and allow it to cool. Tear it apart to scoop up black bean salsa or honey butter, or use it as a base for Navajo tacos.
