The World's Best Cheese For 2022 Has Been Made Official
By Arianna Endicott
Each year, the World Cheese Awards (WCA) competition is held to declare the best cheeses from around the world, and it took place this year on November 2. The cheeses were judged based on smell, feel, and of course, taste, and after a fierce competition between over 4,000 different cheeses, one specific cheese came out on top.
There were around 4,434 cheeses imported from 42 countries to be judged by 250 international judges. The competitors were first narrowed down to 98 super gold champions and then cut down to 16 before Le Gruyère AOP surchoix from Switzerland was declared the grand champion.
The judges noted that the cheese had flavor hints of herbs, fruits, and leather, and it was made by the cheesemaker Vorderfultigen and refined by Gourmino to create a melt-in-your-mouth, slightly crumbly cheese. De' Magi's Gorgonzola Dolce DOP, an Italian buttery soft, blue cheese, slid into second place, just five points behind the gruyère.
