The 'Water Hammer' Trick You Can Use To Open A Stubborn Jar
By Mikala Lugen
Spending minutes tightly gripping a stubborn jar with no hint of easing up the lid can be frustrating, but with every problem comes a solution. Before you give up, try the "water hammer" trick — also known as the "slap tactic" method — as an easy solution to your stubborn jar problem.
To break the seal of a stubborn jar, you'll want to hold the jar in your non-dominant hand at a 45-degree angle — making sure the lid is facing down — and hit the center of the bottom of the jar with the palm of your dominant hand using a surge of power. This will raise the pressure near the lid, breaking the seal and making it possible to unscrew the lid.
You can also try running hot water over the lid to expand the metal lid and loosen the seal. Additionally, you can take a butter knife or spoon and moderately tap or pry along the inside rim of the lid to break the seal, or use a wooden spoon and tap the top of the lid to break the lid threads loose.
