The Unexpected Ingredient That Will Take Your Pie Crust Up A Notch
By Aimee Lamoureux
According to a poll by Premise, pumpkin is the most popular holiday pie in America, while apple pie and pecan pie nearly tied for second place. No matter what kind of pie you plan to bake, you can take your pie to the next level with the help of some extra ingredients.
Cookie crumbs add an extra layer of sweetness and crunch, so try adding gingersnap crumbs, Nilla Wafers, graham crackers, shortbread, or animal crackers to pie crust. Salty snacks, such as pretzels, crackers, and cereal, can also add a satisfying crunch.
Chef Jason Smith adds a boozy, buttery wash to pie crusts before baking, consisting of butter, vanilla, and bourbon. You can also boost your pie filling and swap classic pumpkin for spiced sweet potato, add pears to apple pie, or make a cranberry walnut filling.
