The Unexpected Bread To Use For Grilled Cheese

The thought of a grilled cheese may evoke the image of two square slices of standard white sandwich bread, but there are several other bread options that taste just as good, if not better. Food & Wine listed six of the best kinds of bread for grilled cheese, including sourdough, multigrain, and ciabatta, but there's one type on the list that's not as common for grilled cheese.
An English muffin tastes good in a cheesy McDonald's Egg McMuffin, so it makes sense that it would also work well with grilled cheese. When she shared six inside-out English muffin grilled cheese sandwich options on her show in 2010, Rachael Ray suggested using whole wheat or whole grain English muffins for a healthier option, but white muffins work just as well.
When you slice an English muffin, all those little pockets and grooves make the perfect surface for the melted cheese to settle into, and the small size of the muffins gives you the option for mini sandwiches without having to cut them in half. They also have the perfect shape for adding other ingredient layers, like a round sausage patty, a fried egg, or both.
