The Unexpected Alternative For Vanilla Extract
By Arianna Endicott
Vanilla extract can be used in a multitude of ways, from adding flavor to your desserts and pancakes to saving your smelly refrigerator. There may come a time when you run out of vanilla extract and need it for a recipe, but don’t panic, because you might have the right substitute in your liquor cabinet.
The Pioneer Woman suggests substituting vanilla extract with bourbon, since this alcohol is often used to make the extract in the first place. You can even swap them out at an even ratio — if your recipe calls for one tablespoon of vanilla extract, then you will use one tablespoon of bourbon.
While the addition of alcohol won’t necessarily change the flavor of your baked goods, Betty Crocker says it can still alter the taste, texture, and consistency. The addition of bourbon adds a slightly nutty flavor along with the vanilla and is perfect for pie filling, cakes, and cookies.
