The Single Addition That Will Add A Tasty Richness To Your Meatloaf
By Crystal Antonace
While basic meatloaf typically contains varying combinations of ground meat, milk, eggs, vegetables, and some form of starch like breadcrumbs, adding butter makes it even tastier.
Butter provides an extra boost of savory flavor and adds a helpful serving of moisture to your specialty loaf, giving you an ultra-rich, perfectly tender meatloaf every time.
Prepare your meatloaf as usual, but leave off any topping during the initial bake. Remove it 15 minutes before it's done, and top it with 1 to 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter.
Use a pastry brush or knife to spread the butter along the surface evenly, then add your sauce or topping and bake it for another 10 to 15 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
You can even take it a step further by using a fork to poke holes in the loaf prior to cooking so the richness of the butter and sauce can seep in and impart more flavor.
Instead of the ketchup or barbecue sauce topping, you can make a flavorful pan sauce with butter, olive oil, chicken or vegetable stock, fresh herbs, and chopped garlic.
