The Simple Way To Upgrade Caprese Salad
By Camryn Teder
Caprese salad is a tasty Italian appetizer with a refreshing taste and just a few ingredients. The salad consists of fresh beefsteak tomatoes, creamy sliced mozzarella cheese, fresh basil leaves, salt, pepper, and a drizzle of olive oil, but there are interesting ways to spruce up the simple assortment.
Chefs are always experimenting with subtle changes to Caprese salad like exchanging beefsteak tomatoes for dried tomatoes or opting for sharper cheeses, but you might want to consider swapping them for fruit. Professional chef Gregorio DiMarco starts with a bed of leafy greens and replaces the tomatoes with watermelon for a subtly sweet new edge.
You can also add cucumber to contrast with the soft bite of watermelon, or even replace the watermelon with peaches instead. Consider using a different cheese such as feta or mozzarella, and swapping the basil for mint, or try adding a lemon, mint, and sumac marinade.
