The Simple Potato Trick For Eliminating Rust On Your Cast Iron
By Mikala Lugen
A cast iron pan is among the best tools you can cook with, due to both its durability and the natural nonstick layer that develops when it’s properly seasoned. Maintaining the pan can be tricky, as soap and water will remove the seasoning and lead to rust, but this handy potato and salt hack is the way to go.
Potatoes contain an oxalic acid, which helps to dissolve and clean off tough materials and rust. PureWow recommends pouring a decent amount of coarse salt (or baking soda for an extra-strength clean) in your cast iron skillet, cutting a potato in half, and using the exposed side as your "brush" to scrub in a circular motion up against the salt on the pan.
While this method is all-natural and doesn’t require soap or chemicals, it's still good to ensure that your cast iron remains properly seasoned afterwards. PureWow says to spread some oil into the skillet, and place it in a 400 degree oven for around one hour, which will ensure your cast iron is ready-to-use with all of its best nonstick features for all your future cooking plans.
