The Regional Cheesesteak Variety That Features Tomato Sauce
By Matthew Wilson
Philadelphia is the home of the best cheesesteaks in America, but if you're looking for a saucy spin on the classic recipe, consider visiting Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.
The cheesesteaks in Lehigh Valley feature well-cooked steak, peppers, cheese, fried onions, and a special tomato-based sauce.
Each restaurant has its own spin on the sauce, but it's generally made from tomatoes. Some variants taste sweet, like at Matey's, while some are tangy, like at the Brass Rail.
Meanwhile, the family-based Tallarico Foods created a sauce that complements steak while being different from current offerings like ketchup or pizza sauce.
Despite the variations, the region is united in its fondness for sauce on cheesesteaks, making the region's sandwiches different from Philly.
