The Record-Breaking 2,400-Year-Old Soup Found Inside A Chinese Tomb
By Nick Johnson
While we're all familiar with the classic expression, "Soup's on!" soup is a classic and comforting meal that has been around for longer than you might think. In 2010, a team of archaeologists discovered that humans likely got their literal 'soup on' for the first time around 2,400 years ago.
The 2,400-year-old Chinese soup was unearthed when a tomb was excavated near what was once the nation's capital city Xian, per BBC. Archaeologist Liu Daiyun said of the find: "It's the first discovery of bone soup in Chinese archeological history. The discovery will play an important role in studying the eating habits and culture of the Warring States Period (475-221BC)."
The bone broth was discovered in a bronze cooking pot with a diameter of 24.5 centimeters and a height of 20 centimeters — though it's unclear exactly what bones went into the ancient broth. One of the most glaring facets of the ancient meal's discovery is that the soup became green, which archeologists explained is the result of oxidation of the container.
