The Reason McDonald's Salts Its Fries But Not Its Hash Browns
By Erin Metz
In a viral TikTok, former McDonald's corporate chef Mike Haracz explained why the chain sprinkles salt on its fries before serving them to guests but not on its hash browns.
His insider knowledge revealed that hash browns consist of a grated potato mixture that is seasoned before being molded into the arched shape fans know and love.
McDonald's adds the right amount of salt to its hash browns before they're formed, frozen, and shipped to local restaurants, which can be easily tasted once reheated.
French fries are not salted until right before serving, since it would be difficult for manufacturers to soak them in saltwater brine for pre-seasoning before shipping them off.
Salt can easily be sprinkled onto french fries and tossed together before serving, but due to their rigid form, hash browns would break apart if they were shaken in the same way.
