The Reason Giada De Laurentiis Cuts Tomatoes With Scissors
By Kalea Martin
Many culinary pros recommend a serrated knife or a tomato knife to cut tomatoes, but Giada De Laurentiis always opts for scissors instead.
From minestrone to shrimp fra diavolo, pretty much any dish with canned tomatoes you see on her blog specifies that the ingredient be “diced with scissors.”
She shared on her blog, Giadzy, that it was something she always saw her mom doing, and therefore, she learned to do it, too.
“Don't knock me, it's tradition,” she said while cooking a weeknight pasta Bolognese in a video on Facebook. Using scissors to cut pizza also happens to be an Italian tradition.
Using scissors, you can simply cut the tomatoes directly into the pot or in the can they came in. This method also keeps all the juices from the tomatoes contained.
